What We Do

Digital Tax Compliance Made Simple for You

Making Tax Digital requires businesses to keep digital records and submit tax information to HMRC using compatible software. MTD for VAT is already mandatory for all VAT-registered businesses. From April 2026, MTD for Income Tax begins for sole traders and landlords earning above 50,000 pounds. ABM Chartered Accountants handles all of it.

Our ICAEW and ACCA qualified accountants set up your software, configure your digital records, and manage your quarterly submissions so you stay compliant without adding to your workload. Whether you need help with MTD for VAT, preparation for MTD Income Tax, or both, we make the transition straightforward.

What Our Making Tax Digital Service Covers

From setting up your software to filing your quarterly updates, here is how ABM Chartered Accountants keeps your business fully compliant with Making Tax Digital requirements.

Digital Record Keeping

Quarterly Updates

Preparing and submitting your quarterly summaries to HMRC on time so penalty points never build up.

Transition Support

Guiding your business from traditional filing to full MTD compliance without disruption or delay.

Why It Matters

Stay Ahead of the Digital Deadline

HMRC’s points-based penalty system means that every missed quarterly update earns a penalty point. Once you hit the threshold, a 200-pound fine applies automatically, and further late submissions attract additional charges. ABM Chartered Accountants files every update on time, so penalty points never become your concern.

Beyond avoiding penalties, MTD gives you a more accurate, real-time view of your tax position throughout the year. No more scrambling at year end to pull figures together. With digital records maintained properly from the start, your tax affairs are always current, always accessible, and always ready for review.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to the Making Tax Digital questions we hear most often. Contact our team for tailored guidance.

What is Making Tax Digital?

Making Tax Digital is HMRC’s programme to modernise the UK tax system. It requires businesses to keep digital records using compatible software and submit tax information electronically. MTD for VAT is already mandatory, and MTD for Income Tax begins from April 2026.

From April 2026, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income above 50,000 pounds must comply. The threshold drops to 30,000 pounds from April 2027 and 20,000 pounds from April 2028. ABM Chartered Accountants checks your income and confirms when you need to start.

You need HMRC-recognised software that supports digital record keeping, quarterly updates, and direct submission to HMRC. Options include Xero, QuickBooks, Sage, and FreeAgent. ABM Chartered Accountants recommends the best fit for your business and handles the setup for you.

Under MTD for Income Tax, you submit quarterly updates to HMRC covering each three-month period of the tax year, plus a final declaration by 31 January. For MTD for VAT, returns are submitted quarterly as they are now.

Each missed deadline earns a penalty point under HMRC’s points-based system. Once you reach four points, a 200-pound fine is charged and further late submissions attract additional penalties. HMRC has confirmed no penalty points will apply to quarterly updates in the first year.

Fees depend on the scope of your MTD obligations and the complexity of your income sources. We offer transparent, fixed-fee pricing covering software setup, quarterly submissions, and year-end filing. Contact ABM Chartered Accountants for a tailored quote.
