Who needs to file a self assessment tax return?

You need to file if you are self-employed, a landlord, a company director, a high earner, or if you have income that is not taxed at source through PAYE. HMRC will usually notify you.

The online filing deadline is 31 January following the end of the tax year. For example, the return for the 2024/25 tax year must be filed online by 31 January 2026. Late filing attracts penalties.

HMRC charges a 100 pound penalty immediately if your return is late. Further penalties apply after three, six, and twelve months. Interest is also charged on any tax paid after the deadline.

Yes. ABM Chartered Accountants identifies every expense you are entitled to claim, from travel and equipment to professional subscriptions and home office costs. Claiming correctly reduces your tax bill significantly.

Payments on account are advance payments towards next year’s tax bill, due on 31 January and 31 July. They are based on the previous year’s liability. We help you budget and plan for these.

Fees depend on the complexity of your tax affairs and the number of income sources involved. We offer fixed-fee pricing with no hidden charges. Contact us for a personalised quote.
